Bethlehem Steel Images - Page 1 Bethlehem steel was founded in 1904 by Charles M. Schwab. It produced the steel used to build the golden gate bridge, the US Supreme Court building, and many of the skyscrapers in New York. Buffalo Steel last employed around 13,000 workers. The Company produced a wide variety of steel mill products including hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated sheets, tin mill products, carbon and alloy plates, rail, specialty blooms, carbon and alloy bars, and large diameter pipe. Its principal markets included automotive, construction, machinery and equipment, appliance, container, service center, rail and energy. The steel making portion of the plant was shut down in 1983 and the coke ovens were shut down in 2001. Bethlehem Steel went bankrupt shortly after and was purchased by International Steel Group. There are plans to demolish the whole complex, so explore it while you can.
